As many trips before, the Schola Cantorum trip to Oxford was both musically and culturally incredible. The unique experience of singing alongside the choir of the Queens’ College was truly memorable. The alternative perspective on our choral approach from Queens College Choir allowed us to view the chosen pieces for the later evensong in a new light, aptly concentrating on the nuances of the music that create a richer sound. Ahead of the rehearsal with Owen Rees, we were fortunate to have a choral workshop with Quintin Beer, Director of Music at St Peter’s College whilst we also were provided the experience of a Q&A with the previous Ardingly students, currently studying at Oxford. Their perspective on life at University and passion for their subjects encouraged the pursuit towards University, whilst also alleviating many of the anxieties around leaving Ardingly.
Following a walking tour of Oxford, we rehearsed with the choir of the Queens’ college in their iconic chapel. It was a bumper evensong with Responses by Rose, Stanford’s setting of the Canticles in G before Howells’ ‘Like as the hart’ served as the anthem. Special mention must go to Matilda and Nathaniel for their brilliant solos in the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis whilst Laura sang her solo in the Howells with typical style. There was time for a swift visit to McDonalds on the way back to cap a wonderful day of music making.
Many thanks must go to the Music Department at Ardingly College for organising such an immersive trip. The enthusiasm for music and education truly inspires us as young musicians.
