House Life

Pastoral Care & Wellbeing > House Life

“My House is my home from home at Ardingly, where I have made lifelong friends.”

Margherita, Sixth Form student

Lower School (Years 7 and 8)

In the Lower School the four houses are co-educational and include both day and boarding students. Drake, Hamilton, Shaw, and Thorne are all located within the Lower School building.

The Lower School is managed by the Head of Pastoral and the Head of Academic, with the boarding house having its own Housemaster and boarding team. Similar to the Senior School houses, each Lower School house has a team of Tutors.

Senior Houses (Years 9–12)

Students are divided into houses based on gender and whether they are boarders or day students. There are two boys’ boarding houses, Mertens and Hilton; two girls’ boarding houses, Aberdeen and Toynbee; three boys’ day houses, Crosse, Rhodes, and Pearson; and two girls’ day houses, Neal and Burgess.

Upper Sixth, University Style Living in Godwin Hall

In Upper Sixth all students, regardless of gender or boarding status, move into Godwin Hall, where they belong to either Woodard Boys or Woodard Girls.

“My House has changed me as a person... I have been shaped into a better, more engaged and ambitious all-round person - socially, academically and in extra-curriculars. I have made memories that I will never forget... And most importantly, the tight community that we have established in Mertens is something I will never lose.”

Jiayi, Sixth Form student
