Ardingly pupils in years 6-8 have enjoyed a year of remarkable success in competitions run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust.
In the Intermediate (U16) Challenge, held in February, a record seven pupils from Y8 qualified for the second round, placing them in the top 4% of participants; well done to Dan J, Georgie T, Ralph H, Sebbie R, Tarquin B, Toby A and Wilf R. All five pupils who were able to sit the second-round paper comfortably achieved a Merit, putting them in the top 25% of qualifiers. This was by far a new record performance for Ardingly Y8s.
In the recent Junior (U13) Challenge, Ardingly also reached new highs. No fewer than 71 pupils achieved Bronze, Silver or Gold awards, which are given to the top 40% of over a quarter of a million entrants. 15 Ardingly pupils have qualified for second-round competitions, which represents a performance in the top 4%. Congratulations are due to: Dan J, Eva B-S, Felix G, Georgie T, James F, Mark S, Ralph H, Sam P, Sebbie R, Tarquin B, Toby A and Wilf R of Y8; to Joseph J of Y7; and to Ivan K and Louisa K of Y6. Particular credit to Dan, Sebbie and Toby, who have qualified for the Junior Maths Olympiad, an elite competition for the top 1200, or 0.4%, of participants in the Junior Challenge.
These figures set new records for Ardingly at all levels. We wish the 15 qualifying pupils success in the follow-on rounds in mid-June, and we look forward to high achievement by these year-groups in future maths competitions.
