Empowering Young Musicians at Ardingly College

At Ardingly College, music is an integral part of our curriculum, and we take pride in our rich tradition of musical excellence. Led by a dedicated Music Subject Lead in the Prep School, supported by our college-wide music department and specialised music teachers, we offer an array of opportunities for budding musicians.

With over thirty exceptional visiting music teachers, we provide hundreds of vocal and instrumental lessons each week. Students can explore a wide variety of instruments, from the violin and trumpet to the electric guitar and voice, whether pursuing graded exams or simply enjoying the personal growth and confidence that music brings.

Music in the Prep Farmhouse (Nursery – Year 2)

Our youngest learners experience the joy of music with weekly curriculum-integrated lessons in the Farmhouse. They engage in singing, movement, and percussion, with a curriculum that combines Kodály and Orff methods to nurture creativity, listening, and musical notation skills.

Throughout the year, events like the Christmas Nativity, Assemblies, and open mornings provide platforms for our young talents to shine, fostering early confidence and a love for music.

Music in the School House (Year 3 – Year 6)

In Years 3 to Year 6, students dive deeper into music literacy, performance, and collaboration. Music becomes an integral part of their weekly timetable. Yearly choir sessions prepare them for important events like the Remembrance Service, Grandparents Day, Christmas Concert, Carol Service, and the Summer Concert.

We encourage all students to join an ensemble, from the Fiddlers String Group to the Percussion Ensemble, and our impressive concert band comprising 30 children. Informal concerts each term provide opportunities for students of all abilities and ages to showcase their progress to proud parents and peers.

Throughout the year, we organise inspiring instrumental workshops, bringing our students together with senior school pupils under the guidance of professional musicians. This culminates in a concert for parents. Additionally, we offer small group theory tuition and invite students to participate in Senior Music Ensembles to further their musical journey.
