Encouraging and Inspiring Players and Vocalists
Music is a key element of education at Ardingly College and we maintain a proud and flourishing tradition of musical excellence. There is a dedicated Subject Lead for Music in the Prep School who is supported by the rest of the College’s music department and specialist music teachers. Hundreds of singing and instrumental lessons are taught each week by thirty outstanding visiting music teachers.
Children can choose from a wide range of instruments. Whether violin, trumpet, oboe, voice, electric guitar, classical or contemporary, there is something that will resonate with every child. Whilst many of our children ultimately work towards graded exams, we celebrate the confidence and development that music affords every child involved in music at Ardingly.
MUSIC IN THE PREP FARMHOUSE (NURSERY – YEAR 2)
Music is experienced by our youngest pupils, with weekly lessons built into the curriculum in the Farmhouse.
Children enjoy exploring singing, movement and percussion instruments in their lessons. Approaches of Kodaly and Orff are merged to deliver a curriculum that encourages creativity, listening and performing alongside learning musical notation.
The Christmas Nativity, Assemblies and open mornings allow children to showcase their progress regularly and developing the confidence and love of music from the start.
MUSIC IN THE SCHOOL HOUSE (YEAR 3 – YEAR 6)
In Years 3 to Year 6, children enjoy a curriculum where they develop music literacy, performance, and collaboration skills.
Music lessons are part of the weekly timetable for Years 3 – 6. In addition, each year group has a timetabled choir session in which they work towards key events: Remembrance Service, Grandparents Day, Christmas Concert and Carol Service and the Summer Concert.
All children are encouraged to be part of an ensemble as soon as possible. Activities range from Fiddlers String Group, Percussion Ensemble to a wonderful concert band of 30 children!
Each term, two informal concerts give pupils to the opportunity to perform in public. All abilities and ages are encouraged to perform and have their progress celebrated by their parents and peers.
Throughout the year, we offer inspiring instrumental workshops where our pupils come together with senior school pupils under the instruction of professional musicians, working towards a concert for parents at the end of the day.
To extend individuals, small group theory tuition may be offered, alongside the invitation to play in Senior Music Ensembles.
