Ardingly College were delighted to welcome Mark Stone as part of the Music @ Ardingly series on Thursday, 11th January.  Chamber choir students in the Prep and Senior School were given an enlightening masterclass as Mark willingly shared his wealth of experience. The Prep School Chamber choir worked on William Todd’s evocative ‘Ave Verum’ whilst the Senior School Chapel Choir looked at music by Sir James MacMillan and Grayston Ives.

Following his wonderful recital of Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’ in the evening, Mark returned on Friday to give a masterclass with Schola Cantorum ahead of their CD recording in March in which they will record a series of Christmas carols. Peter Warlock’s ‘Bethlehem Down’ was the focus of the workshop with interesting issues of melodic line and contour alongside vocal production being discussed. A thoroughly engaging and enlightening experience for all involved, we thank Mark for his time and wish him well as he continues his work in Philadelphia with performance of George Benjamin’s opera, ‘Written on Skin’.
