What an exciting and eventful first year it has been for me and the Careers Department at Ardingly College. I have been fortunate to have facilitated some extremely interesting and Informative events over the course of the year. We held our first Year 7 ‘Welcome to the World of Work’, at which we hosted 100 pupils from Four schools in an interactive and fun session where the students had to work together to discover what our 15 professionals (parents and OAs) did for a living. We had visitors from a wide range of professions – Aeronautical Engineering, pilots, architects and fashion designers to name but a few.
One of the main priorities of the Careers Department this year was to start establishing a network of contacts and a policy and procedure to assist our pupils in being proactive in their search for essential work experience opportunities. I am delighted to say we have managed to find over 20 work experience placements for our pupils so far this year, including fashion boutiques, architects’ studios, galleries and finance departments. Work experience is becoming so valuable for students’ personal statements and UCAS applications as well as CVs. I will be looking to support many more students in finding exciting work experience placements in the coming year.
Our Careers in Languages event inspired and excited our Senior School Languages pupils when they had the opportunity to hear from some of our parents and OAs who work in exciting professions using languages. Over the course of 2016/2017 we will be running a number of department/subject specific Careers events.
The Careers Department is always looking for parents and OAs to become involved in our students’ development. If you feel you are able to provide some support – either by talking to a group of pupils about your career path/profession, offering careers advice or potential contacts for work experience placements – please contact me on email@example.com. I would love to hear from you.
