A summer full of work experience

One of the aims of the Careers Department at Ardingly College is to support our students looking for work experience opportunities and to help them to understand the expectations, responsibilities and experiences of the working world.

Seeking a career within fashion Emily gained work experience in a well know fashion design house. Another sixth former looking to move into paediatric counselling found a valuable placement at a children's charity.

Emily Robertson spent a week in a well-known Fashion Design House in Mitcham.  Her week involved crystallising dresses, observing a photoshoot for publication and finally designing seven of her own dance outfits.

“It was incredible to see first-hand how much effort and how many people are involved in designing even one outfit.  I love fashion and would love to pursue a career within Fashion – possibly on the editing side.  This week gave me insight a small section of the ‘behind the scenes’ of part of this exhilarating, creative and ruthless industry”.

Abigail, is applying to study Paediatric Counselling at university and managed to find a work experience placement at a children’s charity in London.  Her week enabled her to gain insight into some of the needs of very deprived primary school pupils and how the organisation supports these pupils and staff.

“I was fortunate enough to be taken on a school visit by a Counsellor.  It was such an eye opener for me to be introduced to underprivileged children and see how Charities can provide essential training and support using the funds raised through fundraising events.  The week has certainly confirmed that this is the career path I want to pursue”.
