Ardingly Prep School Library
At Ardingly, our aim is to develop in every child a lifelong love of reading and the skills to use information competently and responsibly.
The Prep School Library provides a bright, comfortable and cosy place for pupils to browse, read and research. It is open and fully staffed throughout the school day and is managed by qualified librarians with the help of Year 8 Library Monitors. Pupils are encouraged to use the Library on a regular basis. They can pop in during breaks and at lunchtimes to browse and borrow books and there is also a drop-in time for parents after school on Thursdays.
The library stocks an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction material for all ages and reading abilities, with new titles being purchased regularly. The fiction section includes books ranging from classics and traditional stories to the very latest novels; there is something for everyone – short stories, picture books, biographies and graphic novels. The library also contains audio-CDs, magazines, online resources and the film versions of children's books on DVD. The collection has been further enhanced by the recent introduction of a new digital library supported by Overdrive; this exciting new venture allows pupils to access an ever- increasing range of academic and recreational eBooks and audio books anytime, anywhere
Every English class has a timetabled weekly library lesson (fortnightly in Years 7 & 8) when the children can exchange their books and simply enjoy a period of quiet reading; library staff also utilise this time to involve the children in a series of learning activities which aim to develop their information literacy skills and encourage their love of literature.
Library staff also work closely with their academic colleagues to ensure the curriculum is well supported; this is achieved by providing the relevant resources and collaborating with individual departments on the design and delivery of research assignments and projects
At Ardingly we believe that reading is the key to academic achievement. It is this desire to create in the children a real passion for reading that is the driving force behind the library's annual program of special events and activities which include author visits, book clubs and book fairs, reading games, quizzes and competitions
