Ardingly Prep School Library
Our aim is for Ardingly Prep pupils to develop a love for reading and to encourage the development of their information literacy skills.
In the Library, the children have access to a wide range of texts across a variety of genres. We are constantly updating our stock to ensure it remains relevant to the curriculum and to the reading interests of the children. They are able to make suggestions for books they have particularly enjoyed which, if appropriate, we will endeavour to purchase.
As well as general fiction and non-fiction, sections in the Library include Graphic Fiction, Bitesize (shorter reads), Poetry, Biographies, and short story collections. We aim to provide texts that are accessible to a wide range of reading abilities. We stock books on audio CDs and also film versions of many well-known novels.
Our fiction section contains many of the traditional classics as well as novels by modern authors. We also purchase a wide range of general interest books in our non-fiction section – we aim to have something for everyone!
Working closely with teaching staff, we design project work relevant to the subjects pupils are studying. This enables us to make certain our non-fiction stock reflects the topics each year group will be looking at. During library lessons, we teach information literacy skills, which will encourage the students to become independent learners with the ability to plan projects and locate, use and evaluate information for a range of purposes.
Library lessons are also an opportunity for students to change their books, listen to recommendations from their peers, teachers and the Librarian, with time for quiet reading.
The library is open every break and lunchtime for children to change their books, do some work or just enjoy a nice space to read in.
We are also open every Tuesday from 4.40pm until 5pm – a chance for parents to drop in with their children and change books.
The Library takes an active part in the life of the Prep School, getting involved in all sorts of activities – Science Week, Team Building, European Day of Languages, even sporting events and school trips! We are so much more than a room full of books!
