Year 2 visit Anne of Cleves House
Year 2 visited Anne of Cleves House in Lewes as they have been studying The Fire of London.
Time was spent in the kitchen looking at the gadgets and comparing them to the appliances we use today. They had the opportunity to crush herbs using a pestle and mortar, make herb sachets in muslin and make ‘loaves of bread' from salt dough. They also made a pomander by pressing cloves into an orange.
Upstairs, they were shown how the house had been constructed and which building materials had been used. They looked at the many fire hazards with candles and hot wood bed warmers used in a house made out of wood, and a bed made out of wood and straw! The children had the chance to make two pieces of wood join together just using pegs.
The children then became ‘houses' and saw how closely together they were built and how quickly and easily fire could spread.
