Headmaster's Lecture Programme
HML - 'The Hypnotist who doesn't use Hypnotism'
On St George's Day, after Sports Day was held on a glorious afternoon, the Sixth Form attended the final HML of the season. The speaker was Dr Martin Taylor, a man who advertised himself as "the Hypnotist who doesn't use Hypnotism". He gave a fascinating talk, explaining how, in his opinion, stage hypnotism is essentially a big charade, relying on the three strands of Suggestion, Peer Pressure and Obedience. The talk was clearly very authoritative and interesting, and the students were all fascinated.

Headmaster's Lecture - Sean O'Callaghan
Head Master’s Lecture- Sean O’Callaghan
The Lent Term HMLs opened with a talk by Sean O’Callaghan. A member of the IRA from his mid-teens, Sean served time in prison before leaving school, and he rejoined the IRA on his release, going on to murder two people. After some time, he realised that what he was doing was totally indefensible, and he became an informer for the Irish government, stopping a number of campaigns, including one to kill the Prince and Princess of Wales. He gave himself up in 1989, and served several years in prison before his release, since when he has been working for peace in Ireland and the UK, and helping young people to find alternatives to gang-related crime.
His talk was extraordinary in its candour, humility and acute analysis of the current political situation in Ireland; when looking back at his past, it was striking that he referred to his victims by name – his life’s work now is dedicated to trying to stop people from blindly following the dreadful path he took in his own youth.
Headmaster's Lecture - James Reynolds
On Tuesday 20th November James Reynolds, recently returned from the Turkey-Syria border, gave an HML on his work as a BBC Correspondent. Mr Reynolds studied languages at university and his Spanish gave him the opportunity to become the BBC’s correspondent in South America. Since then he has covered several areas of the Middle East, China and most recently the conflict in Syria. Despite the fact that the BBC is currently banned from Iran, Mr Reynolds holds the role of BBC Iranian Correspondent.
